The song was Number 1 in the country charts in 1972 - Kris' first as an artist in his own right and
in 1973 it won the Dove award for the "Gospel Song of the Year", beating off nine other nominies.
There is a nice story about how he came to write this song. Kris told it in an interview. To make a long story short, Kris hadn't been to church since his wedding to Fran in 1961, and then a girl ("I 'd go anywhere she asked me to go") took him to that church in Hendersonville. Kris was inexplicably moved by Larry Gatlin singing "Help me" and everything that was happening there and in the end he found hisself doing weird things there he never thought he ever would do or let happen in front of a bunch of strange people. But when it was over he felt like some big burden had been lifted off his shoulders and the words for this song came without thinking up, he was just holding the pen...
